Agenda
9:00 AM - Welcome & Why: BS* & Beer with Travis Brungardt
9:05 AM - BS* Before Build: Pre-Construction with Jake Bruton
Building science cannot be added after plans are finalized and contracts are signed. For a project to succeed, BS* must be embedded in the design, guide material selection and inform the construction methods defined in the contract. Builder Jake Bruton shares how to establish clear performance expectations and measurable success metrics during pre-construction to protect your firm and deliver better outcomes for your clients.
9:55 AM - Networking Break
10:05 AM - Down & Out Water Management with Steve Baczek
Water is the number one cause of building failure, making water management the top priority in any high-performance project. From roof design and back-vented rain screens to WRB, flashing integration, grading and subterranean drainage, controlling bulk water outside the building envelope is critical. Architect Steve Baczek shares practical, buildable details for moving water down and away from the structure and addresses strategies for managing interior water vapor.
10:55 AM - Networking Break
11:05 AM - Air Barrier & Thermal Envelope with Steve Baczek
With today’s energy efficiency goals and indoor air quality standards, airtightness has never been more critical. A well-detailed, continuous air control layer is essential to achieving the durability, health and performance outcomes clients expect. Comfort and efficiency also require more than simply adding insulation. Architect Steve Baczek explains how to select and place materials within or outside the building assembly to create an effective air barrier and high-performing thermal envelope.
12:00 PM - Networking Lunch
Midday, we break for lunch to recharge, grab a bite and connect with fellow attendees while continuing the conversations sparked during the morning sessions.
12:50 PM - Choose Wisely: Materials & Methods with Jake Bruton
A home is made up of hundreds of components, each with multiple parts, requiring builders to make thousands of decisions on every project. High performance builder Jake Bruton walks through a practical decision-making framework for selecting the right materials and methods based on site conditions, performance goals and risk management. From foundation drainage to roof ventilation and every penetration in between, these critical choices ultimately determine the success of the project.
1:40 PM - Networking Break
1:50 PM - High Performance HVAC with Ross Tretheway
Choosing the right HVAC system is critical to comfort, efficiency and overall building performance. Ross Trethewey explores key considerations when evaluating systems such as source air versus radiant floors and forced-air solutions, and how each approach impacts energy use, indoor comfort and long-term performance in high performance homes.
2:40 PM - Networking Break
2:50 PM - The Final Frontier of Efficiency: Hot Water with Ross Tretheway
While our building envelopes have improved and technological advancements have brought energy savings through low-load satisfying heat pumps and electricity-sipping LED light fixtures, we haven’t seen the same level of improvement in delivering hot water. Mechanical engineer Ross Trethewey explains that this is mostly a design problem and is easily solved with properly sized piping based on a good layout. Backed by the right equipment choice, these systems deliver the final piece of the energy efficiency puzzle.
3:40 PM - Networking Break
3:50 PM - Energy Conservation: Production & Storage with Ben Bogie
With the electrical demands on our grid ever increasing, the way we build our homes can do a lot more to manage and support those demands. Third-generation builder Ben Bogie offers a range of solutions from load-shedding devices and smart panels to solar generation and battery storage.
4:30 PM - Networking Happy Hour
Wrap up the day with a relaxed networking happy hour featuring local brews. Attendees can grab a beer, connect with peers and continue the conversation with fellow building professionals and Building Science Symposium sponsors.

Ben Bogie
Ben is a third-generation high performance builder. In the late 70’s his father and grandfather we’re local pioneers building some of the first super insulated homes in Connecticut. This early adoption set the stage for Ben’s upbringing in the business, building science concepts of thermal bridging and air leakage were part of the everyday workflow. He started full time work in the trades at age 16 and worked his way through the industry doing residential renovations, custom finish carpentry, high end residential millwork construction and installations throughout the northeast, historic preservation, and finally immersing himself in contemporary high-performance building. Running his own business, he gained a reputation as the person to turn to for difficult building questions, functional product recommendations, and exacting execution of complex details. A tireless learner, he is devoted to researching and understanding any aspect of construction and the building environment he can. This has led to his growing involvement with a broad range of industry media outlets and publications, live training events, and speaking engagements. His current work is centered on strictly high performance, low energy, high end residential new construction and major renovations. With more than 20 years of field experience he brings practical and attainable solutions to difficult cutting-edge projects, leveraging his hands on knowledge to make daunting details easy and understandable.
